There have been few stories more disgusting than those concerning Atlanta QB Michael Vick and the dogfighting he has been indicted for conducting. The craven, low-life scum who engage in this cruel debauchery not only treat their own animals despicably but actually steal the pets of others for “bait.” I can find few things this side of the Holocaust more contemptible.

But even for this there has been a chorus of rationalization. Some other jocks and rap singers have spun it to tell us that this vicious behavior is “cultural.” Where do you suppose this crapola comes from? Try the American left, more specifically those  implanted in our university system. It’s multi-culturalism run amuck, with no values or judgments to be made about any behavior. Ecuadorian headhunters, New Guinea human child sacrificers, urban dog thieves — it’s all relative and thereby OK in their sick, repulsive world.

We know that alcoholics and spouse abusers often have friends and even their own victims who act in a manner that encourages their behavior. That’s “enabling.” Apparently there is no activity that the valueless multi-culturalists would condemn, making them the worst type of enablers. There are other destructive forms of enablement. As we watch pathetic young female entertainment personalities like Brittany Spears, Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton run amok in front if us note that their parents aren’t far away. Lohan’s mother is actually her manager. Great job, mom. We watched Hilton’s mother bad mouth the judge who sentenced her daughter right there in the court room. Those finding that judge a hard case are way off. A real one would’ve parked loud-mouth mama in the next cell.

Too many teachers and coaches like my radio colleague Tom Danehy tell me that many student discipline problems are exacerbated by parents who will enable their kids’ bad behavior by defending it to the bitter end and even attack authority figures who attempt to stop or correct it. Other parents live in a dream world of ignorance and denial — check the Columbine killers.

There are even university administrations like those in Minnesota who actually covered up a murder-rape. They apparently have the same mindset as the flakes in charge of the University of Colorado who allowed a lying plagiarist to defraud both their system and its students in the name of “academic freedom” in the Ward Churchill case. Churchill and his lawyer whine because the Colorado Board of Regents finally caught up with his fraudulent life. He claims his First Amendment rights were violated by his dismissal which he alleges happened over his statement that many of those killed on 9-11 deserved it. While the board canned him for other transgressions, such as stealing other people’s work, they gave him another year’s pay on top of the one he collected under suspension while awaiting their final decision — a total of $192,000.

The real problem isn’t why he was canned. It’s why was he hired in the first place? What clot of moral and intellectual bankrupts allowed a total blowhard like this on the payroll?  Who allowed him to accumulate tenure? The lawsuits should be against them by the taxpayers ripped off to pay him. The Churchill case illustrates how far enablement can be stretched. Churchill claimed at one point special consideration reserved for Native Americans as he purported to be a Cherokee. Cherokee leaders denied his fraudulent assertion, but others in the sick university culture said that didn’t matter because he “spiritually identified” with the tribe. The latest definition of victimhood apparently allows you to claim special dispensations reserved for a group you aren’t even part of even after they reject you.

It’s all just cultural. Which, in an earlier format, is the argument used by Southern slave owners to retain their “property earned by honest toil.” Ask those using the “culture” crap to support Vick how they like that one.

About Emil Franzi

Emil Franzi is the owner and host of "Inside Track" on KVOI - 690AM and KAPR - 930AM in Douglas.  The program airs on Saturdays from 12 pm till 5 pm.

Franzi currently writes a weekly column for the EXPLORER (formerly the NORTHWEST EXPLORER). He filled the TUCSON WEEKLY with close to a million relevant words from 1993 to 2004 and was an OpEd regular with the Az Daily Star from 1994 to 1998. His writing has also appeared in PHOENIX Magazine, ARIZONA HIGHWAYS, and the late CITY MAGAZINE in Tucson.

But then, Franzi is an iconoclast.

This website is Franzi's baby, put together with work, faith, and a little help from his friends, like Tom Danehy, Joyce Downey and Mike Tully.  The concept -- politics, books, humor, the Old West, movies, "Pet Talk" and letters -- is Emil's.  This unique brew seems to work.  This website averages more than a thousand "hits" a day and keeps growing.

You can read Emil Franzi's views on all things political and cultural, as well as opposing views, on our "Politics and More" page.
